  • Sallie Mae Student Loans Repayment

My son did not graduate but took out loans totaling almost 80,000. When he first entered college, I was told that in order for him to have lower interest rates, that I should co-sign and I did. Little did I know at the time that I will never be able to be dropped as a co-signer because he did not get a degree. He can not consolidate because he did not get a degree. He has loans totaling $594 a month. We split this three ways (him, my husband, and me). I have called repeatedly trying to get this lowered. However, in another year or so this is going to go up to $764 a month. Sallie... More...

  • Cannot afford my monthly student loan balance

I have private and federal student loans with Sallie Mae. My federal loan total is $4,474.17 and my private loan total is $63,742.64. Sallie Mae is asking $75.28 a month for the federal and $568.18 a month in payments. The federal loan is affordable but the private loan is ridiculous. I only make $32,000 a year. I do not mind paying around $300 a month in private but $568.18 a month is way too much. I am definitely willing to pay for these loans but not go bankrupt for it. I have spoken to customer service on more than one occasion and nobody is ever useful in helping me lower my payment. I... More...

  • Sallie Mae Needs to Be Stopped

I graduated from a four year college in 2009 being about $75,000 in debt. In December of 2009 I got something in the mail from Sallie saying that I had to start paying off my debt and that my interest had not been paid in over a year. (My father had originally agreed to pay for my interest but he fell into deep financial debt around that time and never paid it. It would have been nice if he told me.) I called them and agreed with the customer service rep that I could pay $209 a month. They originally wanted me to pay a little over $500 a month which I could not afford in any way, shape, or... • Sallie Mae terrible customer service

On March 13 "Debbie" provided terrible customer service and hung up on me (after a 45 minute phone call) before I could provide a review at the end of my call. While on the phone, she assured me that she had emailed me a document I needed which I never received. She gave me grossly inaccurate information regarding my loan deferment. The following day, I had to spend another 45 minutes on the phone with a supervisor (who took 20 minutes to get to the phone) attempting to find a solution to the problems "Debbie" caused. Though "Ken" was more knowledgeable, as... More...

Sallie Mae is the bane of my existence! It was fine during my grace period. Then I call a few months before my regular payments are due to find out what my regular payments are going to be. They told me around $447. This was far more than I could afford. I recently graduated, and getting a decent job right out of college is difficult. All they told me was that I could apply for forbearance and delay it for three months. Okay. So I called The day before my first official payment was due, as instructed. I asked to apply for forbearance, and they told me I was still in grace period until... More...

  • Welcome to a life of debt and misery... welcome to Sallie Mae

Sallie Mae consistently fucks students over, I have not heard ONE good thing about them. Sadly because my parents were poor but somehow my promise financial aid never happened I had to borrow a lot. Now they take most of my money and I will be paying them off til I die. I cannot tell you how many times I have cried over this crap. These people don't get back to you when you need a postpone of payment, they "complete" your email requests without actually doing anything. I have been trying to postponed a payment for two weeks now and now thats its the due date and STILL I have... More...

You claim in your letter that the terms on my loan have been changed and further claim, “It’s important to know that the payment terms usually change for one of the following reasons”. Sallie Mae should be charging 0.75% interest (the discount rate that the feds get) instead of 10% . They are feeding off of students that had trouble paying for school in the first place. We bailed out the auto industry; we bailed out the banks; we fought in wars; we are taxed out of every orifice in our bodies. The student loan bubble will burst and tax payers will be responsible---not Sallie Mae. Kids are committing suicide over their loans that they can’t pay back because Sallie Mae keeps keeps jerking them around. Think about it! More...

  • Sallie Mae rips off the unemployed

Sallie Mae, Wilkes Barre PA. I am unemployed, out of unemployment compensation, homeless and hungry. Sallie Mae calls 6-7s a day demanding a $400.00 payment. I called them to try and get qualified for some type of deferment and was told by customer service that I could do a zero income deferment for 25 years and then they would forgive the loan. I asked how this would affect my credit and was told it will not. I also told him I found it hard to believe that Sallie Mae was just forgiving loans and was told they no longer try to collect on people with no income. Then he transferred me to... More...

  • Sallie Mae is KILLING my generation's future!

I made the biggest mistake of my life when, acting upon the belief that had been ingrained in me since early childhood that education was the key to a prosperous future, I pursued an undergraduate and graduate degree, both which required loans. I do not recall signing any paperwork with Sallie Mae, yet they somehow acquired several of my loans. I just graduated in August, and even before then they were saying I was late on my payments, that I needed to pay more than my monthly income per month, and that I could not defer my loans because I had done so once before (I found out that was a... Sallie Mae has been a thorn in my side since I first received money from them for college. What a mistake. I have come to terms that they are difficult to work with and am just dealing with it until I can get them paid off. However, every time I call in I am unsuccessful in reaching a conclusion with the issue at hand. Most recently, I had to be transferred three times because I could not understand the representative that was helping me. I think it is really degrading the Sallie Mae puts me in the position of bad person when I tell someone "I can't understand you, is there anyone... More...

  • Sallie Mae continuing to demand money for loans paid in full

In May 2010 I refinanced my house to pay off all of my student loans. In July 2010 began receiving collection calls from Sallie Mae. I sent in copies of my cancelled checks repeatedly via fax and mail. No one I spoke to at Sallie Mae was authorized to fix the problem, they could only nag for more money. In the September of 2012 I finally reached Christopher Chamberlain, who explained that one faction of Sallie Mae had sold off my loans to another faction of Sallie Mae during the time I sent the checks, so that the checks had never been applied to my accounts properly. He said he would fix... More...

  • Sallie Mae Calls

This past week, we received a phone call about a loan for a family member that does not live with us. During this time we started to receive 6-7 robo calls per day which upon answering automatically goes to a hold service. I contacted Sallie Mae on 11/5/13 and was assured that my phone number would be removed in 48 hours, but as of today 11/8/13, I have received an additional 6 calls. This is an inefficient practice by the company and extremely annoying. Especially since we do not have a loan with Sallie Mae. More...

I've been using Sallie Mae for years and never had a problem with paying my undergraduate student loans. However, when my (international) graduate school advised me to get a 'Smart Option' student loan that's where I ran into trouble. I don't know what happened to Sallie Mae over the past few years, but everyone I talked to on the phone after my loan was approved was extremely rude. I'd like to clear something up about Sallie Mae's "relentless" calls to people. They are not personally calling anyone to harrass about your delinquency. Sallie Mae works for the federal government under the Department of Education. Because of this, the fed allows Sallie Mae to call each delinquent borrower up to 6 times a day if the account is not resolved out of it's delinquency. Sallie Mae is not harrassing you to be jerks, your accounts are set up on an auto-dialer and if your account shows a delinquency of even ONE day the auto-dialer will pick it up and... More...

  • Concealing Information on MY. Account

Sallie Mae refuses to provide the effect of payments on the balance of a student loan. Unlike every other lender, who provide in each statement a 'previous' and 'current' balance reflecting the effect of each payment on the balance, they only provide a transaction history of payment amounts, and how much is applied to principle and interest. When I requested documentation of my balance as affected by each payment, as well as the original amount of the loan transferred to them by Citibank, I was snowjobbed until a manager finally told me that this information is... Yesterday, while going through some paperwork, I found a document from Citibank with the balance I owed before they sold my loan to Sallie Mae in 2011. After nearly two years of approx. $500 monthly payments, the balance has gone UP. When I tried to find information on the effect of each payment on the balance, all I got was a transaction history with each payment's application to principle and interst. There is no previous balance amount, or even the original loan amount when Sallie Mae took it over from Citibank. After a thirty- minute snow job -- no answer to my question -- a... More...

  • Sallie Mae is a predatory lender that just wants to steal your money

I have a small private student loan (not sure how I got it since I just accepted whatever my university gave me) that does not allow for any deferments or forebearances (unless I want to $50 every 3 months). I have a new baby at home and my husband goes to school full-time and works part time. The only way we eat every month is with food stamps. We barely have enough money to pay rent, and have been reducing our other monthly expenses all that we can. If I could pay off the loan I would in a heart beat. I am almost three years out of school, from Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. I have been dealing with Sallie Mae since and they have proven to be the most difficult aspect of college. Sallie Mae is the worst Company and has the worst Customer Service I have ever worked with. DO NOT EVER GET A LOAN FROM THEM....THEY WILL HAUNT YOU THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. This Company is the worst, with my daughter's account I am able to speak with them regarding the payments but every time I call in to do so they loose the file that says that. Every time I have to go through a long drawn out episode before the sag gets corrected. Perfect word for this Company is Idiots!!!!! Stay away.

I foolishly cosigned four student loans for my grandson. I have had to pay them, which doesn't seem to faze them. I have gotten calls saying do you know a better phone number for him?

I have also been told I was given a forbearance, when I didn't know I had one. Yes, I asked for one, but they certainly didn't tell me I had one!

Recently, some hussy told me I had better make those payments when I was doing it!

Some public corporation.

I have an issue with Sallie Mae as they ripped me off on the interest rate and fee’s on my student loan, then turning the loan over as defaulted to collect insurance from the govenment. I did a loan consolidation at 3% interest with Sallie Mae in June of 2005. After I sent in the paper work, Sallie Mae dragged their feet on the consolidation (6 months). After dragging their feet for six months Sallie Mae then stated in a 3 different letters to me that Sallie Mae was having problem doing the consolidation due to "problem with reference" or "we are having issues with reference" or "lack of references", even though these references are the same references I used to get the student loans through the FAFSA site.

First, a letter sent to me from Sallie Mae stated that I had a lack of references; I could not understand this as I provided the two required references on the consolidation application like the application requested. Second, another letter I received from Sallie Mae stating we are having issues with your references, so I updated them online on Sallie Mae's website, I thought things were good, I was wrong. Latter on within a month after updating the references, Sallie Mae then called me on the phone, I again provided the name of my references with addresses to some foreign speaking person on the phone who stated she worked for Sallie Mae and who I could hardly understand as well as her understanding me. I then received a third letter a few days later that stated, "We tried to contact you by phone for updated references but were unable to reach you". WTF, I just provided this non-English speaking representative at Sallie Mae with all the reference information, what gives. I thought this was some kind of mistake, since it came a couple days after the phone call, so I ignored it. I heard nothing more after this from Sallie Mae.

Any how, after 180 days of being out of school the loan repayment begins. Well, I found out on the first payment that the interest rate was at 7.14% not at 3%. I contacted Sallie Mae over and over without any success of getting this issue taken care of. I then threaten Sallie Mae that I would withhold payment if this was not taken care of right away and that I was entitled to do this under federal law (Fair Credit Reporting Act). Sallie Mae wrote back promising to correct the issue. Next month nothing happened, so I withheld payment, contacted Sallie Mae again, and offered to pay what I actually owed. Sallie Mae refused to accept the money I actually owed. After this the problems started, I had to sent certified letters and e-mails (near a 100 e-mails) to Sallie Mae, this went on back and forth on the consolidation issue and Sallie Mae did not want to talk about it anymore, other than to say Sallie Mae did nothing wrong. I was getting nowhere with these idiots. Then after a few months of back and forth e-mails, Sallie Mae took the position that I had defaulted on the loan and sent the collection agencies after me.

Eventually, after a year and half of fighting back and forth with Sallie Mae and the many collection agencies, Sallie Mae turned the account over to NSLP as a defaulted loan. Sallie Mae never disclosed to any of the collection agencies or National Student Loan Program that I was disputing this loan, because of the interest rate. Sallie Mae told National Student Loan Program and/or Nebraska Student Loan Program that it was an uncollectable debt and I had defaulted on the loan, in order so Sallie Mae could collect through a government insurance claim the overcharged interest rate and the other fee’s that Sallie Mae added on to the loan. I looked this up in under federal law and it seems that Sallie Mae violated the Federal Civil False Claims Act, 31 U.S.C § 3729(a)(1) and § 3729(a)(2) by reporting this loan as being defaulted when in fact I had a legal right to dispute this loan under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

I let NSLP know what was going on by sending them a certified letter outlining what had happen with copies of the documentation and then I let the Department of Education know this as well. Both stated that they would review the case. The Department of Education dragged their feet way past the time limit that is establish by law to answer my complaint, only after I complained about DOE missing the deadline to respond, did they answer my complaint unfavorably. NSLP stated they would review the complaint, but never followed up at all, I still am waiting on the loan review as NSLP promised me in 2008 and 2010. In 2009, NSLP did a treasury off on my income taxes for $1500.00+ and then told the credit bureaus that I owed $80,000.00 when in fact my loans where less than $14,000 to begin with. I have asked the credit bureaus to remove this information or to provide proof of validated debt; I then provided proof of what I owed to the three credit bureaus. Two of the credit bureaus remove the extra money above the $14,000, but Experian did not remove it and has refused to remove it. This ended up causing me problems with my job as I need to hold a security clearance to keep my job. The security clearance people seen this in my credit file and it has held up my clearance (not denying it or approving it). Well of course my employer, hire someone else, and gave me until this October of 2012 to resolve it or be totally laid off.

So, I contacted Senator Patty Murray, Congressman Adam Smith, and Attorney General McKenna’s office to get them involved and help resolve this issue. Both legislators and Attorney General wrote letters to Salle Mae and Sallie Mae denied any wrong doing. I then provided written copies of the correspondences between Sallie Mae and me, showing that Sallie Mae had offered to correct the issue. Neither legislator has done a follow up and has done little to nothing to help out so far. Attorney General McKenna did the most foot work, but stated that their hands are tied and I would need to file a lawsuit.

As of today, nothing has been done about Sallie Mae or the (NSLP) National Student Loan Program by congress even after all the problems other students like myself are having with Sallie Mae and NSLP. Both, Sallie Mae and National Student Loan Program are free to screw your credit up and obviously they do not have to follow federal laws either. Sallie Mae and National Student Loan Program are free to put anything they want on your credit record and credit bureau Experian does not even verify anything that these two criminal companies report, even if you provide the documentation that proves different, “like the proof I submitted to Experian that was completely ignored.” I have been forced to look for attorney and I want to file a lawsuit for damages as both Sallie Mae and NSLP are denying they have done anything wrong.

Right now I'm faced with losing my job here very soon as I have been having issues getting a security clearance, because of the fraud and false credit reporting being committed by Sallie Mae and National Student Loan Program (NSLP). Sallie Mae currently has a class action lawsuits pending against them in the 9th district Federal court for phone harassment and robo calls. Other lawsuits are also pending, as well as an investigation.

I do feel for all of you out there who are dealing with Sallie Mae and/or (NSLP) National Student Loan Program. My advice for others facing similar issues is to get yourself an attorney before it’s too late and it causes other problems like loss of your job, loss of your income tax return check, overcharging of fee’s, or garnishment of wages. As for anyone considering going to school and getting a loan, my advice is don’t deal with Sallie Mae or NSLP, otherwise you will be sorry. You have been warned!

I took out a loan for $7000 in 2008, and had the payment deferred because I went to graduate school full-time. I graduated from undergrad in the Fall of 2009 (a semester early), began paying after my 6 month grace period ended, and then had my payments deferred. In a matter of 4 years, I somehow owe over $8,700. I have taken out a few other private loans as well because I needed about $5,000-$7,000 each year to cover any extra expenses, and NO OTHER private loan has accrued this much interest in 4 years. This is borderline predatory lending, and I have discouraged many students from taking out Sallie Mae student loans.

I worked in Financial Aid for over 5 years as a student and was fairly confident when I decided to go with Sallie Mae. I was fine until I graduated. I have a Masters, so I have accumulated a lot of debt, and I have been on the Income Based Repayment system since I graduated (2 years ago.) EVERYTIME I renew my IBR they seem to lose my information and I get statements saying I owe over $1000. First of all, on a teacher's salary and IBR, I would NOT being paying that much in loans, secondly, why should I have to continually send in my IBR information when I call and they specifically say they received it and that everything is fine. DO NOT believe them, ask to speak to a manager, not a "team leader". I am very disappointed in this "business.

I have a parent plus loan with Sallie Mae. They are crooks and unreasonable and worst of all are no help to students or their parents. In fact, they suck! I would never, ever refer this place to a dog, let alone a human being. I don't understand how they can still conduct business with thousands of complaints..they need to be put out and I mean off this earth. What a sham they are and what a shame that they can operate in this country. I will be dead by the time they get any principal from me.

I am an international student and I have had a terrible experience with them. It took them over a month and a half to process my application and that too after at least 30 calls to their completely unresponsive customer care. I gave up trying after a while and I am now planning to apply for the Citi assist loan. If you are an international student seeking an educational loan from a US based lender I advice you to stay away from Sallie Mae.

Sallie Mae has ruined my life. It has gotten to the point where I hate that I even went to college in the first place. I just got off the phone with a rep and she sounded younger than me and yet she was yelling at me as if I was a child of hers. The manager I spoke with was no better. Something has to be done as to the treatement of the customers. This company is terrible.

Sallie Mae/Pheaa/AES is misleading parents with their Parent Plus loans by not offering deferrments as long as dependent child is in school, after 6mnths they start billing the parent, when the parent contacts them about a forbayence becuase their child is still in school thats when they find out that they have to be the one in school now does that make any sense? They trick you into thinking the loan wont come due until your child is out of school but in reality it will be due in 6mnths unless you the parent are in school. These people are loan sharks and ripping off parents everywhere! They have sent an income execution to my employer for almost double the loan amount and looking for 15% of my pay. If this company is run through are goverment there is something wrong here, this is misleading parents throught Pennsylvania and obviously New York too!
